Then she
crept back to her place as inconspicuously as possible, holding the sounds as
if to protect her chest. In the meantime the music had started again and the
conversations continued. Suddenly Nefer felt taken by the hand and pulled up
from the pillow. She was about to protest when a look in the young man's deep,
serious eyes silenced her.
What does "BMI" mean? The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a statistical key figure
that shows the relationship between body weight and height. The calculation of
the BMI is a quick and easy way to estimate your own weight based on guide
values. The BMI acts as a rough guide for an ideal weight. It does not take
into account the physique or the ratio of fat and muscle tissue. It is a
standard size and a simple and quick way to evaluate your own weight and to
prevent health risks from being underweight or overweight.
The BMI cannot be used for children, seniors and athletes whose body mass does
not allow average values.

BMI by age What does the BMI say? The Body Mass Index (BMI) defines the
relationship between body size and body weight. The value indicates whether
normal weight or underweight or overweight is present.
The BMI serves as a guideline for health, which does not take into account some
individual characteristics such as the composition of body mass (fat, muscles,
bone density, etc.).
The BMI formula The body mass index is based on a simple mathematical formula:
It is calculated from the body weight in kilograms divided by body height in
meters squared:
BMI = weight (kg) / size (m) 2
Sample calculation A man measures 1.85 meters and weighs 90 kilograms. His BMI
is calculated as follows: 90 (kg) divided by 1.85 (m) 2; it is 26.3.
A woman with a height of 1.63 meters and a weight of 53 kg, on the other hand,
has a BMI of 19.9.
Age influences the assessment of the BMI, since body weight generally increases
with age. For this reason, different evaluation tables apply to adults, which
show different values for the individual age groups.
Evaluate BMI result Tables created by the World Health Organization (WHO) are
used to evaluate the body mass index. Depending on their age, these define
different benchmarks.
In principle, each BMI table shows four main categories:
Underweight Normal weight Overweight Obesity (called obesity) A distinction is
made between different levels and levels of severity within these categories. A
total of eleven weight ratings can be shown.
Detect overweight Not every pound too much makes you sick, but permanent
obesity increases the risk of numerous diseases such as arthrosis,
arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes and various forms of cancer. In
addition to breathing difficulties and joint pain, metabolic and sex hormone
disorders can also occur.
Detect underweight A BMI below 18.5 is underweight. Because the body is at risk
of an insufficient supply in this case, those affected have an increased risk
of cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis. In addition, the metabolism and
the immune system can be impaired.
The BMI helps to identify and reduce all of these health risks at an early
stage. It can be used to document the progress made towards achieving the ideal
weight - for example, through exercise and a change in diet.
