CBD Dosage and Correct Intake – the Complete Guide
By Vapor Spirit Fachteam

The right CBD dosage is the most common question customers ask us at Vaporspirit. No wonder: cannabidiol works individually, and there is no single dose that suits everyone. In this pillar guide, we bring together everything you need to know about CBD intake, number of drops, strength and safety – concise, practical and without medical healing claims.
Note: This article does not replace medical advice. In Switzerland, CBD is freely available as a consumer product, but it is not offered as a medicinal product. If you have an illness, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take medication, talk to your doctor beforehand.
What does CBD dosage actually mean?
CBD dosage describes how much cannabidiol you take within a certain period – in milligrams (mg). Unlike with medicines, there is no officially defined standard dose for CBD. How much is right for you depends on your body weight, your metabolism, your individual sensitivity and the product you choose. The proven principle is: “Start low, go slow” – begin with a low amount and increase slowly.
Which factors influence the right CBD dose?
Several factors determine which amount of CBD feels right for you. These include body weight, metabolic rate, experience with cannabidiol, the time of use (e.g. in the evening or during the day) and the chosen format – oil, capsule, flower or liquid. Your individual endocannabinoid level also plays a role: some people already clearly notice 5–10 mg per day, others need 30 mg or more.
High-quality products often work in smaller amounts. A low dose of a pure full spectrum oil can achieve more than twice the amount of a low-quality isolate – keyword entourage effect.
CBD dosage table: guidance based on experience
The following reference values are general experience values, not medical recommendations. They help you find a sensible starting dose, which you then adjust individually.
- Low range (beginners): approx. 5–15 mg CBD per day, split into two doses.
- Medium range (users with some experience): approx. 15–40 mg CBD per day.
- Higher range (experienced users): approx. 40–100 mg per day, ideally after consultation.
Always start in the low range. Increase by a few milligrams every 3–7 days until you feel the effect that suits you. More is not automatically better – experience shows that above a certain amount the effect levels off.
Calculating CBD drops – how many drops match my dose?
For oil bottles, the key formula is: total CBD amount in mg ÷ approximate number of drops per bottle = mg per drop. A 10 ml bottle typically contains around 250 drops.
Example calculation for a 10 ml CBD oil: 5 % oil = 500 mg CBD ÷ 250 drops ≈ 2 mg per drop. 10 % oil = 1000 mg ÷ 250 ≈ 4 mg per drop. 15 % oil ≈ 6 mg per drop. 20 % oil ≈ 8 mg per drop. 25 % oil ≈ 10 mg per drop.
So if you start with 10 mg CBD per day, you take around 5 drops of a 5 % oil or 1–2 drops of a 25 % oil. For beginners, concentrations of 5 % to 10 % are ideal because the dose can be controlled more precisely. Which strength suits which goal is covered in the article Choosing the right CBD oil strength.
CBD intake: which form suits you?
How quickly and how strongly CBD works depends not only on the dose but also on the form of intake. Each form has its own advantages and disadvantages.
- Sublingual (drops under the tongue): onset after 15–45 minutes, duration 4–6 hours. The best control over the dose and good bioavailability – by far the most popular method.
- Oral (capsules, gummies, food): onset only after 30–90 minutes, duration 6–8 hours. Practical on the go, but lower bioavailability, as CBD passes through the liver.
- Inhalation (vape, liquid, flower): effect noticeable within minutes, duration 1–3 hours. Suitable if a quick onset is desired, but harder to dose and associated with the usual risks of inhaling.
- Topical (creams, ointments): acts locally on the skin without entering the bloodstream systemically. Ideal for targeted skin applications, no effect on internal complaints.
Tip: With oil under the tongue, you should keep the drops in your mouth for at least 60–90 seconds before swallowing. This way more CBD is absorbed directly through the oral mucosa.
Common mistakes when taking CBD – and how to avoid them
Beginners often make similar mistakes that affect the effect and the experience. Being aware of them helps you achieve good results from the start.
- Doses that are too high too quickly: if you start straight away with 50 mg, you often notice nothing – or unpleasant effects such as daytime tiredness. Patience pays off.
- Too short a period of use: some effects only appear after 2–3 weeks of regular intake. If you stop after 2 days, you do not give CBD the chance to work.
- Incorrect storage: heat, oxygen and light slowly break down cannabidiol. CBD oil should be stored cool, dark and tightly closed.
- Low-quality products: without CO₂ extraction, laboratory analysis and transparent origin, even the right dose cannot work reliably. Look for Swiss premium quality and independent test reports.
- Swallowing the drops: if you do not hold the drops under your tongue, you lose much of the fast absorption through the mucous membranes.
CBD safety: what happens with an overdose?
According to current studies, CBD is considered well tolerated. Even higher amounts usually do not cause serious side effects, but rather tiredness, dry mouth, slight dizziness or digestive complaints. A life-threatening overdose has not been documented according to the current state of research.
Caution is advised with: simultaneous use of medication (e.g. blood thinners, antiepileptics, antidepressants), liver disease, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and for children. Cannabidiol can interact with medicines via the cytochrome P450 system – so be sure to check with a doctor beforehand.
If you suspect an interaction or are unsure, you should reduce the dose or pause and contact a professional. You can find the full framework on law, the THC limit and safety in the CBD Law & Legality Switzerland Guide.

FAQ – the most important questions about CBD dosage
How many drops of CBD per day make sense?
There is no general answer. The number of drops depends on the oil strength and your goal. A sensible rule of thumb: start with 5–10 mg CBD per day and increase gently every few days.
Should I take CBD in the morning or in the evening?
Both are possible. What matters is when CBD fits best into your personal routine – some take it in the evening, others split the amount into two smaller portions over the day. You can find all the details with an overview table in our article taking CBD oil in the morning or evening.
How quickly does CBD work?
With drops under the tongue usually 15–45 minutes, with capsules and food 30–90 minutes, with inhalation a few minutes.
Can I take CBD every day?
Most users take CBD daily for weeks or months. It does not cause physical dependence, and regular use can even stabilize the effect.
Does CBD get you high?
No. CBD is not psychoactive. In Swiss CBD products, the THC content is legally limited to a maximum of 1 %; an intoxicating effect is not to be expected with correct use.
Can you overdose on CBD?
Not in a dangerous sense. Possible consequences of very high doses are tiredness, dry mouth or digestive complaints, which disappear once the dose is reduced.
Conclusion: your personal CBD dose
Finding the right CBD dosage is not rocket science, but it requires some patience and observation. Start low, increase slowly, choose high-quality products and listen to your body. If you follow these principles, you will usually find your personal feel-good dose within two to four weeks.
