What mistakes do beginners make when taking CBD?

By Vapor Spirit Fachteam

→ You can find the complete overview of dosage, forms of intake and common mistakes

in the CBD Dosage & Intake Guide.

The most common beginner mistakes and how to avoid them

More and more people are interested in cannabidiol (CBD), for example as part of their

evening routine or simply out of interest in hemp products and general

well-being. However, beginners in particular typically make

a few mistakes when taking it for the first time, which can mean that the CBD does not work as it should.

To make sure this does not happen to you, this blog shows you the most common mistakes when

taking CBD – and how you can avoid them. We also show you why

high-quality products such as the cannabidiol oils from Vaporspirit (Swiss Made

since 2015) make the difference.

Mistake 1 – Expecting too much from the first dose

Many newcomers expect CBD to have a strong, “noticeable” effect immediately –

similar to medication or THC. But CBD works differently.

Why does this mistake happen?

Cannabidiol is not intoxicating; many describe the perception as subtle. How CBD interacts with the

body's own endocannabinoid system is still being researched.

A better approach

  • Give your body 3–14 days to adjust.
  • Observe how you personally feel in everyday life.
  • Cannabidiol often works gradually, not suddenly.

Mistake 2 – Choosing the wrong dosage

One of the biggest beginner mistakes: dosing too high or too low.

Too much at once

Many people think: “More is better.” With cannabidiol, this is the wrong approach. Excessive amounts

can even make you tired or be counterproductive.

Too little, and then saying ‘CBD does not work’

Many start with 1–2 drops, stay at that amount and are surprised that nothing happens.

How do you dose correctly?

  • Start slowly with 5–10 mg per day.
  • Increase slightly every 2–3 days.
  • Ideally: “Start low, go slow.”
  • Observe the effect over at least 1 week.

Tip: On every oil bottle, Vaporspirit explains exactly how many mg per drop

are contained – this makes dosing easier and safer for beginners.

Mistake 3 – Taking CBD incorrectly (wrong administration)

Many beginners swallow CBD oil straight away – and are surprised by the weak effect.

The most common mistake

Cannabidiol is swallowed like cough syrup or vitamin oil. As a result, it loses

around 50–70 % of its effectiveness.

Correct intake for maximum effect

  • Place the oil under the tongue for 60 seconds
  • Only then swallow
  • Afterwards, do not drink anything for 15–20 minutes

Sublingual absorption = faster effect + significantly higher bioavailability.

Mistake 4 – Testing CBD with low-quality products

Many newcomers choose cheap, unclear or synthetic products because they “just want to try it out”. Result: no effect.

Common quality problems of cheap products

  • Contain isolated CBD without terpenes
  • No laboratory analyses
  • Cheap MCT oil without quality
  • Imported goods from unknown sources
  • Often only 2–3 % genuine plant compounds

Why quality is crucial

Full-spectrum oils (like those from Vaporspirit) contain all the natural plant compounds that

create the entourage effect – this makes them significantly more effective than isolates or

cheap products.

How can you recognise a good oil?

  • Swiss production
  • Organic or Demeter raw materials
  • Laboratory certificates
  • Clear THC and CBD declaration
  • No trans-cannabinoids
  • Natural extraction such as CO₂-SFE

(Vaporspirit meets all these criteria – Swiss Made since 2015.)

Mistake 5 – Being impatient and giving up too quickly

Many take CBD for two or three days and then say: “It does not work for me.”

Yet CBD – like any natural plant product – needs time.

Why patience is important

How CBD is perceived differs from person to person. There are no fixed time frames:

  • Some notice a change after a few days
  • Others only after several weeks
  • For some, no noticeable change occurs
  • An effect on complaints has not been proven

The right strategy

  • Test for at least 14 days
  • Adjust the dosage slowly
  • Do not change every day
  • Pay attention to subtle but clear changes

Mistake 6 – Using CBD with the wrong expectations

Some think cannabidiol is a cure-all. It is not.

What CBD is

  • a natural product from the hemp plant
  • not intoxicating
  • part of a personal routine
  • the subject of ongoing research
  • available in various product forms

What CBD cannot do

  • Make illnesses “disappear by magic”
  • Provide instant numbing
  • Produce a THC-like high

Cannabidiol is a natural product, not a medicine.

Mistake 7 – Irregular intake

A common beginner mistake: taking CBD only “when needed”.

But CBD works best when it is taken regularly.

Why?

The body builds up cannabidiol slowly. Irregular use = little effect.

How to do it right

  • Take it daily
  • In the evening, if it fits your routine
  • Or split between morning and evening
  • Always at roughly the same time

Mistake 8 – Taking CBD on an empty stomach

Cannabidiol works significantly better when taken after a small meal.

Why does CBD work more strongly with food?

Fats increase the absorption of cannabinoids.

Tip

Take cannabidiol after a meal with healthy fats:

avocado, nuts, olive oil, yoghurt, cheese – or simply after dinner.

Mistake 9 – Not knowing which CBD product suits your own needs

Many buy the first product they see – often without knowing whether it is even

suitable.

Typical examples

  • someone buys a 30% oil straight away as a beginner → hard to dose finely
  • someone does not pay attention to the mg per drop
  • someone chooses isolate, although a full spectrum would have suited them better

Making the right choice

  • Very gentle start: 5–10 %
  • With some experience: 10–20 %
  • Experienced users: 20–30 %
  • Always pay attention to the mg per drop

At Vaporspirit, we advise customers every day – and always recommend the mildest yet

most effective option.

Mistake 10 – Combining CBD incorrectly with alcohol or caffeine

Many beginners do not know that CBD can work differently in combination with other

substances.

Alcohol + CBD

Can increase tiredness. Better not to combine.

Coffee + CBD

Little is known about the combination – pay attention to how you personally feel.

Mistake 11 – Stopping from one day to the next

Many give up after a short time, even though they were close to feeling

the right effect.

What you should do instead

  • Check the dosage
  • Check the quality of the product
  • Take it consistently
  • Plan a 2-week test phase

Mistake 12 – Not keeping a diary

A small trick that almost no beginner uses: a CBD diary.

Why it helps

You recognise patterns:

  • How am I sleeping?
  • How do I feel?
  • How does stress affect me?
  • At what dose do I notice improvements?

This helps you find the perfect dosage much faster.

Why high-quality products like Vaporspirit make the difference

Many customers initially think cannabidiol does not work for them – until they switch to a clean,

genuine full-spectrum CBD oil.

The advantages of Vaporspirit oils

  • Swiss Made since 2015
  • Bio Suisse & Demeter raw materials
  • Superclean CO₂ extraction without solvents
  • Without trans-cannabinoids
