CBD vs. Melatonin and Valerian: The Sleep Comparison

By Vapor Spirit Fachteam

Melatonin and CBD are both associated with better sleep – as is valerian – but they work in completely different ways. Melatonin is a hormone and requires a prescription in Switzerland, valerian is a traditional medicinal herb, and CBD is a freely available cannabinoid. This comparison sets out the differences between CBD, melatonin and valerian factually – without health claims.

If you are looking for guidance on difficulties falling asleep, you will find the most important facts here. You can find the basics of cannabidiol in the cannabinoids guide.

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. CBD interacts with the body's own endocannabinoid system; the effect of CBD is often associated with relaxation and coping with inner restlessness. Unlike melatonin, CBD does not make you tired directly. In Switzerland, CBD with a THC content below 1 % is freely available, for example as CBD oil. For more on the sleep connection of individual cannabinoids: CBN and sleep.

What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body that controls the sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin helps to shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and is typically taken about one hour before going to bed. Important for Switzerland: here, melatonin is classified as a medicinal product and is available by prescription only. Only a few preparations are authorised (e.g. with 2 mg melatonin per tablet); it is prohibited as a food supplement, and imports without a prescription can be confiscated at customs. At higher doses, medical supervision is all the more important.

What is valerian?

Common valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a traditional medicinal plant whose root and essential oils have long been used for their calming effects in cases of nervous difficulty falling asleep. Valerian is freely available in Switzerland, often combined with hops, lemon balm or passionflower. Plant-based alternatives such as chamomile are also mentioned in this context. The research is mixed – nevertheless, many people value valerian as a gentle, non-prescription starting point.

CBD vs. melatonin: the differences

The central difference is how they work: melatonin acts directly on the sleep rhythm to make it easier to fall asleep, whereas CBD is not sedating and is associated more with general relaxation. Then there is the legal situation – CBD is freely available, melatonin only on prescription. For many people in Switzerland, this is the practical deciding factor when choosing between melatonin and CBD.

Valerian or CBD?

CBD and valerian are closer to each other than CBD and melatonin: both are plant-based, both are freely available, and neither is designed to “switch” the sleep hormone. Some people want to combine CBD and valerian or take CBD and valerian together.

On the question of interactions between valerian and CBD: there are no widely documented problems with this combination, but reliable scientific studies on it are lacking. If you take both, or additionally take medication, you should clarify this with a professional.

CBD sleep drops with melatonin – are they available in Switzerland?

Many “CBD melatonin sleep drops” circulate online, including tests and comparisons – mostly from countries where melatonin is sold freely. In Switzerland, things are different: because melatonin requires a prescription, freely available CBD drops with melatonin or CBD oil with melatonin cannot simply be offered here. A sleep drop with melatonin is therefore not a freely available CBD product in Switzerland.

If you are looking for CBD sleep drops, you will instead find legal alternatives without melatonin: high-quality CBD oil, often as broad-spectrum CBD (with cannabinoids but without detectable THC) based on MCT oil. Such CBD sleep drops then contain no melatonin, but rely on the entourage effect of the plant spectrum. For melatonin itself: prescription via a doctor or pharmacist.

CBD and melatonin: experiences

Many experiences circulate around CBD and melatonin (as well as CBD with melatonin) – the range is wide. Some report that a CBD product in the evening helps them settle down more easily, others notice little. Such CBD melatonin experiences are subjective and not proof of effect; what suits you depends on individual needs. A CBD product can support an evening routine, but it is not a sleeping pill.

Use and timing

Melatonin is usually taken around 30 to 60 minutes before going to bed – sometimes up to 60 minutes before going to bed. There is no fixed rule for CBD; many people take it in the evening as part of their routine, often about 30 minutes beforehand. In practice, this means: taking valerian and CBD some time before going to bed gives the body time to settle down – but for restful sleep, good sleep hygiene matters most.

What suits whom?

  • Melatonin – if a rhythm problem (shift work, jet lag) has been medically confirmed and there is a prescription.
  • Valerian – for a gentle, traditional plant-based start without a prescription.
  • CBD – for a non-sedating, freely available approach via the endocannabinoid system, with a focus on relaxation.

Safety and interactions

Melatonin can have side effects such as headaches or gastrointestinal complaints; taking CBD is generally considered well tolerated. Since cannabinoids can interact with certain active substances, the following applies: if you take medication regularly, first read our article on interactions with medication and consult a doctor. If in doubt, simply ask your doctor or pharmacist.

What to look for when buying CBD

When choosing a CBD oil, it is worth looking at: testing by an independent laboratory, full or broad spectrum (for the entourage effect), organic quality and a legal THC content below 1 %. You can find suitable, lab-tested CBD oils in the Vapor Spirit CBD shop range. For the right amount, see the guide CBD oil dosage.

Frequently asked questions: CBD, melatonin & valerian

Which is better: CBD or melatonin?

There is no general answer. Melatonin times the sleep-wake cycle but requires a prescription in Switzerland. CBD is not sedating and is freely available.

Are CBD sleep drops with melatonin available in Switzerland?

Not over the counter: melatonin requires a prescription, so CBD drops with melatonin are not freely available here. CBD oils without melatonin, for example broad-spectrum ones, are legal.

Can you combine CBD and valerian?

Some people take CBD and valerian together. Reliable studies on interactions between valerian and CBD are lacking; if you take medication, ask a professional first.

Does CBD make you tired like melatonin?

No. CBD is considered non-sedating, whereas melatonin specifically times the onset of sleep and can shorten the time it takes to fall asleep.

What do experiences say about CBD and melatonin?

Experiences with CBD and melatonin vary greatly and are subjective. They are not proof of effect – what suits you depends on individual needs.
