Smoking or vaporizing CBD flower: which is better?
By Vapor Spirit Fachteam

Vaporizing is the gentler method: in a vaporizer, CBD flower is heated to 160 to 220 degrees instead of being burned – this produces significantly fewer harmful substances, preserves the terpene aromas and uses the flower more efficiently. Smoking works just as quickly, but combustion produces tar and other combustion by-products. If you consume regularly, a vaporizer is clearly the better choice.
The direct comparison: joint vs. vaporizer
Both methods deliver cannabinoids quickly into the body via the lungs – the differences lie in exposure to harmful substances, taste and efficiency:
Criterion | Smoking (joint) | Vaporizing (vaporizer) |
Temperature | 600–900 °C (combustion) | 160–220 °C (controlled) |
Harmful substances | Tar, carbon monoxide and other combustion by-products | Significantly fewer, as there is no combustion |
Taste | Smoky, terpenes partly burn off | Clean, terpene aromas are preserved |
Onset of effect | Very fast (minutes) | Very fast (minutes) |
Efficiency | Lower, some of it burns unused | Higher, cannabinoids are released gently |
Smell | Strong, clings to clothing | Much more discreet |
Costs | Only papers/filters needed | One-time purchase of a vaporizer |
Why vaporizing is gentler
When smoking, the plant material burns at 600 to 900 degrees. This produces tar, carbon monoxide and other combustion products that put a strain on the airways – regardless of whether tobacco is mixed in or not. A vaporizer, on the other hand, only heats the flower enough to release cannabinoids and terpenes as vapour without burning the material. The result: noticeably fewer harmful substances and a cleaner taste experience.
Important to know: in Switzerland, the smoking ban in enclosed public spaces also applies to vaporizing, and the same rules on fitness to drive apply as for smoking – details in our article Can you drive a car after using CBD?.
The right temperature: the CBD temperature guide
The temperature determines which compounds are released and how the vapour tastes. CBD has a boiling point of around 160 to 180 degrees – some terpenes lie below this, others above:
Temperature | What is released | Experience |
160–180 °C | First cannabinoids and light terpenes (e.g. pinene, myrcene) | Mild, aromatic vapour experience |
180–200 °C | CBD is released efficiently (boiling point approx. 160–180 °C), caryophyllene, linalool | Balanced ratio of aroma and vapour – the sweet spot for CBD flower |
200–220 °C | Remaining cannabinoids, heavy terpenes | Dense vapour, tends to be harsh, aromas suffer |
Above 230 °C | Onset of combustion | Avoid – harmful substances are produced again here |
Our tip for getting started: start at 180 degrees and work your way up in 5-degree steps until you find your personal optimum of aroma and vapour production.
Which vaporizer is suitable for CBD flower?
For flower you need a dry herb vaporizer with precise temperature control – ideally a model that covers the range between 160 and 220 degrees in small increments. Devices with convection heating (hot air instead of a hot chamber wall) release the active compounds particularly evenly. You can find suitable devices, filters and accessories in our category CBD Vaporizers and Accessories.
The quality of the starting material also matters: well-cured flower that is not too moist vaporizes much better. Our CBD flower from Swiss production is gently dried and lab-tested – what you should look for in the analysis is explained in our article on CBD lab analysis.
And what about pre-rolled joints and vapes?
If you prefer things simple, there are two alternatives: pre-rolled CBD joints and CBD cigarettes for on the go – or CBD vapes with e-liquid, which work without flower and are particularly discreet. For the full terpene aroma of the flower, however, the dry herb vaporizer remains the first choice.
Frequently asked questions about smoking and vaporizing
Does CBD take effect faster when vaporized than when smoked?
No, both methods take effect similarly quickly – usually within a few minutes, as absorption takes place via the lungs. You can read how long the effect lasts in our article on the duration of CBD effects.
What temperature is ideal for CBD flower?
For most people, the sweet spot is 180 to 200 degrees: CBD is released efficiently and the terpene aromas are largely preserved.
Does vaporizing smell less than smoking?
Yes, significantly. The vapour smells more discreet and dissipates faster, as no combustion by-products are produced and nothing clings to clothing or furniture.
Can I reuse vaporized flower?
Already vaporized flower (ABV – Already Been Vaped) contains only small residual amounts of cannabinoids and is usually discarded.
Is vaporizing allowed in public?
In principle, the same rules apply as for smoking: it is prohibited in enclosed public spaces and usually permitted outdoors. Observe local regulations and be considerate of the people around you.
Conclusion: vaporizing is easier on your airways, the aroma and your wallet – smoking remains the uncomplicated option for on the go. What matters most is the quality of the flower: lab-tested, gently dried and from controlled Swiss cultivation. Discover our CBD flower and the matching vaporizer accessories in the shop.
