CBG effects: the mother cannabinoid explained simply

By Vapor Spirit Fachteam

CBG (cannabigerol) is a cannabinoid of the hemp plant from which many other cannabinoids such as CBD and THC form during the growth process – this is why CBG is often called the "mother cannabinoid"; the specific effects of CBG on humans are currently being researched, and there are no confirmed statements about them yet. This article explains the basics and puts the current state of research into context.

If you are looking for a broader overview of all cannabinoids, you will find it in our cannabinoids guide.

What is CBG (cannabigerol)?

CBG is formed from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), which is considered a kind of "basic building block": through various enzymatic processes, the plant converts CBGA over the course of its growth into precursors of THC, CBD or CBC. Mature hemp plants therefore usually contain only a small amount of CBG, which makes extraction more complex and CBG products correspondingly more expensive.

CBG as the "mother cannabinoid": what does that mean?

The term "mother cannabinoid" refers to the biochemical role of CBGA/CBG as the starting point for other cannabinoids – it says nothing about any particular health effect. To understand how cannabinoids are generally thought to act in the body, we recommend our article The endocannabinoid system explained simply.

CBG effects: what is currently being discussed?

So far, the research on CBG effects consists mainly of preclinical studies. Among other things, the following topics come up in the discussion:

  • a possible connection with general well-being
  • a discussed role in interaction with other cannabinoids (entourage effect)
  • interest from the cosmetics and wellness industry in CBG extracts

These points should be regarded as preliminary. Larger, controlled clinical studies are still lacking for reliable statements about the effects in humans. Here you will find the CBG flowers

CBG oil and CBG isolate: forms of use

CBG is usually offered as CBG oil or as pure CBG isolate. Isolates contain CBG in a concentrated, crystalline form without other plant substances, while oils usually contain a carrier substance and are sometimes combined with other cannabinoids. Which form suits you depends on individual preferences and the intended area of use.

Dosage and interactions

Due to the limited number of studies, there is no official dosage recommendation for CBG either. Basic principles as described in our article on CBD oil dosage – start low, wait for the effect, increase carefully – can be applied in the same way.

Since cannabinoids can in principle interact with certain medications, be sure to read our article on interactions with medications before use and, if in doubt, talk to a doctor or a pharmacy.

CBG in combination with CBN and CBC

CBG is often discussed together with other lesser-known cannabinoids such as CBN and CBC. You can read more about this in our articles CBN and sleep: effects, research and use and CBC: effects, facts and context. Our cannabinoids hub offers the complete overview.

FAQ about CBG

What is CBG?

CBG (cannabigerol) is a cannabinoid of the hemp plant that is considered the starting substance for other cannabinoids such as CBD and THC.

Why is CBG called the "mother cannabinoid"?

Because CBGA, the acid form of CBG, serves biochemically as a precursor from which the plant forms other cannabinoids.

Which CBG effects are scientifically proven?

So far, mainly preclinical data are available. Confirmed statements about the effects on humans cannot currently be derived from them.

Is CBG psychoactive?

No, CBG is not considered psychoactive.

What is the difference between CBG oil and CBG isolate?

CBG isolate is a highly concentrated, pure form of CBG, while CBG oil usually contains a carrier substance and is sometimes combined with other cannabinoids.

Is CBG legally available in Switzerland?

Yes, provided that legal requirements such as the THC limits are met. If you have questions, consult the supplier or the competent authority.

Conclusion

Biochemically, CBG is a fascinating cannabinoid with a special role in the hemp plant. However, research into the actual effects of CBG on humans is still in its early stages.
