Is CBD haram? CBD in Islam – what Muslims should know
By Vapor Spirit Fachteam

In short: Whether CBD is halal or haram in Islam depends, among other things, on the ingredients of the respective product, in particular the THC content, and on the respective Islamic legal opinion. CBD itself is not intoxicating. For CBD products with traces of THC, there are differing religious assessments.
Note: This article is for general information purposes only. It does not constitute a religious legal ruling and does not replace individual advice from an imam or an Islamic scholar. The legal information also refers to Switzerland and may change.
What does “haram” mean in relation to intoxicating substances?
Intoxicating substances play a special role in Islam. In the Quran, Surah 5, verses 90–91, calls for intoxicants (khamr) to be avoided.
The prohibition of intoxicating substances is also explicitly mentioned in the hadiths. Sahih Muslim reports:
“Every intoxicant is forbidden.”
(Sahih Muslim 2002)
Another narration reads, in essence:
“Every intoxicant is khamr and every intoxicant is forbidden.”
(Sahih Muslim 2003a)
For the question of CBD, it is therefore first important to distinguish between CBD, THC and the actual effect of a product.
Is CBD intoxicating?
CBD stands for cannabidiol and is a naturally occurring cannabinoid of the hemp plant.
Unlike THC, CBD causes no intoxicating effect. The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health describes CBD as non-intoxicating, while THC is responsible for the intoxicating effect of cannabis.
In simplified terms:
Property | CBD | THC |
Intoxicating effect | No | Yes |
Naturally contained in cannabis | Yes | Yes |
Psychoactive/intoxicating | Not intoxicating | Intoxicating |
Islamic assessment | Differing views depending on product and composition | Intoxicating products are generally regarded as forbidden |
This is why CBD should not automatically be equated with intoxicating cannabis.
Is cannabis with THC haram?
Here, the distinction between CBD and THC is particularly important.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the cannabinoid responsible for the intoxicating effect of cannabis.
The basic Islamic principle regarding intoxicating substances is clearly stated in the hadiths mentioned: intoxicating substances are forbidden.
Therefore, intoxicating cannabis with a relevant THC content is generally regarded as not permitted in Islamic legal opinions.
For CBD products with very small amounts of THC, the situation is more nuanced.
Are CBD products with traces of THC halal?
This is one of the most important points in the question “Is CBD haram?”.
Some CBD products contain small amounts of THC in addition to CBD. This applies in particular to full spectrum products.
There are different Islamic assessments on this.
Stricter view
According to a stricter interpretation, the mere presence of an intoxicating substance can be problematic. If you follow this view, you will prefer products in which no THC is detectable.
More nuanced view
Other Islamic legal opinions distinguish between a substance that has an intoxicating effect in a relevant amount and a very small amount that is completely absorbed into a product and produces no intoxicating effect.
A legal ruling on CBD published on IslamQA, for example, concludes that CBD may be used if it contains no THC or if a very small amount is completely absorbed and no detectable trace remains.
This makes it clear: there is no simple, universally valid statement according to which every CBD product is automatically halal or every CBD product with traces of THC is automatically haram.
If you wish to follow a particularly cautious position, you can choose products without detectable THC.
What does “THC not detectable” mean?
On a laboratory analysis, THC may be stated, for example, as “n. n.”.
“n. n.” means “not detectable” within the detection limit of the respective analysis.
This is different from saying that a product contains absolutely “zero THC molecules”. A laboratory analysis always specifies a certain measuring or detection range.
It therefore makes sense, when buying, not only to look at the product name but also to check the laboratory analysis of the respective batch.
Full spectrum, broad spectrum or CBD isolate?
The designation of the CBD product can also be relevant.
Full spectrum CBD
Full spectrum products contain various natural components of the hemp plant and may also contain THC.
This is why you should always look at the specific laboratory analysis for a full spectrum product.
Broad spectrum CBD
Broad spectrum products are manufactured in such a way that THC is removed. Nevertheless, the current laboratory analysis of the specific product should be checked here as well.
CBD isolate
CBD isolate consists essentially of isolated cannabidiol.
For a specific product, the current laboratory analysis should nevertheless be checked to confirm the actual THC content.
What about alcohol in CBD products?
Another point can be the carrier substance used.
CBD products can, for example, be made on the basis of:
- MCT oil
- Hemp seed oil
- Sunflower oil
- other vegetable oils
or be alcohol-based.
Whether alcohol in a particular product is permissible from an Islamic perspective can be assessed differently depending on its type, amount, use and the religious legal opinion. Islamic legal opinions also distinguish, for example, between pure alcohol and very small amounts of alcohol that are a component of a product.
If you want to avoid alcohol completely, you can therefore specifically choose an oil-based product without added alcohol.
Which CBD products are of interest to Muslims?
If you prefer a particularly cautious approach, you can pay attention to the following points when buying:
- Check the THC content
Ideally, the laboratory analysis should show THC as “n. n.” or “not detectable”. - Look at the laboratory analysis
What matters is the analysis of the specific product or the respective batch. - Check the carrier substances
If you want to avoid alcohol, you can look for oil-based products without added alcohol. - Consider the product type
Full spectrum products may contain THC. For broad spectrum products and CBD isolates, the respective laboratory analysis should also be checked. - Ask an expert about religious questions
For a binding personal assessment, you can consult an imam or an Islamic scholar.

Is CBD legal in Switzerland?
Swiss law distinguishes between cannabis products with different THC contents.
The Federal Office of Public Health states that cannabis products with less than 1 % THC are generally not subject to the Narcotics Act. At the same time, the FOPH points out that further legal regulations may apply depending on the product category.
This means: “below 1 % THC” does not automatically mean that every product may be freely sold or advertised everywhere, regardless of its use.
Depending on the product, regulations from different areas may apply, for example.
The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office, for example, points out that hemp extracts and cannabinoids may be subject to special requirements as foodstuffs.
This is why the legal assessment should always be based on the specific product category.
Is CBD halal or haram? The key points
The question cannot be answered across the board for every CBD product.
CBD itself is not intoxicating.
Intoxicating THC cannabis is generally regarded as not permitted due to the Islamic prohibition of intoxicating substances.
CBD products with very small traces of THC are assessed differently. Some legal opinions distinguish between an intoxicating amount and a very small amount that has no intoxicating effect or is completely absorbed.
Alcohol as an ingredient or carrier substance can also raise a religious question and is assessed differently depending on the specific situation.
If you prefer a particularly cautious position, you can therefore look for products without detectable THC and without added alcohol.
Frequently asked questions about CBD and Islam
Is CBD permitted in Islam?
CBD itself is not intoxicating. However, whether a specific CBD product is halal depends, among other things, on its composition, the THC content and the respective Islamic legal opinion. A blanket religious ruling for every CBD product is therefore not possible.
Is CBD haram?
Not every CBD product is automatically haram. CBD itself is not intoxicating. For products with traces of THC, there are differing Islamic assessments. If you want to be particularly cautious, you can choose products in which THC is not detectable.
Is smoking weed haram?
Intoxicating cannabis with a relevant THC content is generally regarded as not permitted due to the Islamic prohibition of intoxicating substances.
Is CBD oil halal?
That depends on the specific product. The THC content, other ingredients and the carrier substance used can be particularly decisive. If you want to avoid THC and alcohol completely, you can choose a THC-free, oil-based product without added alcohol.
Do all CBD products contain THC?
No. Not all CBD products contain detectable THC. THC may be present in full spectrum products. For specific products, the current laboratory analysis should therefore be checked.
What does “THC not detectable” mean?
“Not detectable” means that THC was not found within the detection limit of the laboratory analysis used. It does not automatically mean that not a single THC molecule can be present.
Is CBD isolate halal?
CBD isolate essentially contains isolated cannabidiol. However, whether a specific product is regarded as halal also depends on how it is made and on its other ingredients. The current laboratory analysis and product declaration should therefore be checked.
Are CBD drops with alcohol halal?
This cannot be answered across the board. The Islamic assessment may depend on the type and amount of alcohol and on its use. If you want to avoid alcohol completely, you can switch to oil-based products without added alcohol.
Is CBD legal in Switzerland?
Cannabis products with less than 1 % THC are generally not subject to the Narcotics Act. However, further legal regulations may apply depending on the product category.
Where can I check the laboratory analysis of a CBD product?
The most reliable source is the laboratory analysis of the specific product batch. At Vapor Spirit, you can check the respective product information and available laboratory analyses.
Conclusion
