CBD oil and depression: studies & experiences put into context

CBD oil and depression – an overview of experiences and studies
VaporSpirit – Organically Certified Full Spectrum CBD from Switzerland
Depression is one of the most common mental health burdens of our
time. Alongside conventional medical treatment, many people affected look
also for information on plant-based products.
More and more often, CBD oil is coming into focus – a plant-based ingredient,
that is obtained from the hemp plant.
But: What is known about CBD oil and depression?
Here you will find out what research says, how people affected use CBD and
what you should pay attention to when buying.

What is CBD and how does it work?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive component of the hemp plant.
It influences the so-called endocannabinoid system (ECS) – a
network within the body that is involved in processes such as mood, sleep, appetite
and stress.
Scientists suspect that CBD acts via the serotonin receptors (5-HT1A)
in the brain. These receptors play a decisive role in
our mood and emotional stability.
Whether CBD influences processes such as
- stress regulation,
- the perception of inner tension
- or general well-being is being researched; reliable evidence in humans is lacking.
What do studies say about CBD and depression?
Although research on CBD and depression is still in its early stages,
it already provides some interesting first findings:
- Blessing et al. (2015, Neurotherapeutics): C B D was studied in animal models in connection with anxiety and mood behaviour; animal studies cannot be transferred directly to humans.
- Masataka (2019, Frontiers in Psychology): Small study with participants with social anxiety; the results are preliminary and cannot be applied to depression.
- Crippa et al. (2023, Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology): The study examined whether C B D could influence mood; people respond differently, and the data is limited.
➡️ Conclusion: CBD is not a substitute for antidepressants. The results so far are preliminary; whether CBD influences mood and stress processing in humans has not been established.
Using and dosing CBD oil correctly
CBD oil is usually taken sublingually – that is, dripped under the tongue –
and then held there for about 60 seconds.
This way, part of it is absorbed through the oral mucosa.

There is no dosage for depression. In general, the recommendation for CBD oil is “start low, go
slow” strategy is recommended:
Experience value | Recommendation |
Starting dose | 5 – 10 mg CBD per day |
Increase | every 3 – 5 days increase by 5 mg |
Average | 20 – 50 mg per day |
Observe your well-being over several weeks and adjust the amount
individually.
Side effects and safety
CBD is considered well tolerated. Users occasionally report:
- slight tiredness,
- dry mouth or dizziness,
- changes in appetite.
If you already take antidepressants or other medication, you should discuss
taking CBD with your doctor beforehand.
CBD can influence certain liver enzymes (CYP450) that are involved in
breaking down medication.
User experiences
Experience reports on CBD vary widely and are subjective;
they replace neither studies nor a medical assessment.
If you have depressive symptoms, you should always seek medical
or psychotherapeutic advice – CBD is not a
treatment.

More and more people are interested in what role CBD could play in connection with mental illnesses. What matters is this: depression requires medical or psychotherapeutic treatment. If you take conventional antidepressants and have questions about side effects, discuss them with your treating doctors – CBD products are not an alternative to prescribed medication.
CBD products with a very low THC content do not cause intoxication. In Switzerland, they are freely available as long as the legal THC limit of less than 1 % is observed. However, they are not intended for the treatment of chronic pain, depression, anxiety disorders, stress or sleep problems.
Experience reports on CBD vary widely, and there is also no reliable knowledge about high doses. Unlike conventional antidepressants, CBD is not approved for the treatment of depression. Studies are examining how cannabinoids relate to the body's own endocannabinoid system, which is involved in regulating mood, motivation and stress; the results are preliminary. Especially in cases of severe depression, those affected should discuss any addition to or change in treatment with their treating doctors.
The quality of the products used is key. Look for high-quality products with transparently tested ingredients and a declared cannabinoid content. Products of unclear origin carry risks and should be avoided. Reputable manufacturers disclose laboratory analyses that confirm purity and content.
Whether freely available products with a low THC content could play a role in connection with mental illnesses or chronic pain in the future remains for research to show. For mental health, proven measures such as exercise, sufficient sleep, social contacts and professional support remain central.
