Hemp cuttings are small offshoots cut directly from a mother plant. The best part? They are genetically identical to the original plant. So if you have a hemp plant that matches exactly what you are looking for – whether because of its growth, its resistance or its cannabinoid content – you can pass these traits on one to one through cuttings. The small plants are first rooted, either in water or in special propagation containers. Then they are put in a pot and grow into new, healthy hemp plants. The big advantage: you skip sowing seeds and can get started right away, provided the quality is right.
Hemp Cuttings vs. Hemp Plants: The Difference
The difference lies mainly in the stage of development:
- Hemp cuttings are young shoots that still have to develop roots before they can grow into a plant.
- Hemp plants are fully grown, fully developed plants that have either been grown from seeds or have come from cuttings.
The Right Care for Healthy Cuttings
To turn your cutting into a strong plant, a little sensitivity is needed. Here is a short guide:
- Light and humidity: The cuttings need 18 hours of light per day. Fluorescent tubes above a small greenhouse with a moist plastic dome are ideal.
- Watering: As long as the cuttings have no roots yet, it is enough to water them every two days. Once they have rooted, you can slowly increase the amount of water.
- Patience: It takes about 14 days until the root system is fully developed. Then you can transplant the plants into larger pots.
Grower's tip: Let the cuttings dry out slightly now and then (but not completely!) so that the roots are stimulated to search for water. This promotes faster growth.
