For thousands of years, people have enjoyed the subtle high
that smoking tobacco leaves, and thus taking in nicotine, can produce.
But it was only about 220 years ago that doctors began to recognise how harmful smoking can be.
Dr. Benjamin Rush was one of the first to point this out in 1798, describing smoking as
“offensive” and amoral, while at the same time rightly pointing out
that it can cause “incurable diseases” and cancer.
Since then, inventors have been looking for new ways to get a satisfying
nicotine high without the smelly cigarettes. Here is a look at
how vaping came about and where the industry's vapour might go next.
Concern about smoking goes back more than 200 years.

In the 1800s, doctors began to see cases of lip cancer in smokers.
Shortly afterwards, some of the first reports of lung cancer appeared,
with the 1920s seeing almost 1,000 cases reported.
In 1927, Joseph Robinson invented what was perhaps the very first “electric vaporizer”,
a device he said was intended for “medicinal compounds”.

In 1963, another man, Herbert Gilbert, pioneered this “smokeless

non-tobacco cigarette”, but he could not find a manufacturer interested in making

the product.
Over the years there were further attempts at early e-cigarettes. Jed Rose, who

invented the first nicotine patch, experimented in the 1980s in his

lab at UCLA with something called “distilled smoke.”

The e-cigarette as we know it today only appeared when the Chinese smoker

and pharmacist Hon Lik invented it in 2003.
Lik, who at times swallowed up to three packs of cigarettes a day, says he was

motivated to invent a new device after his own father, also a

smoker, died of lung cancer.
“I believed that if I could use vapour to simulate cigarette smoke, it might

help me,” said Lik.

But Lik, like many others, has become a dual user. He still smokes

cigarettes and now also vapes. best Cbd Vape Pen disposable

Researchers still debate what role e-cigarettes play for cigarette smokers; the results are inconsistent.
