tested for pesticides in the laboratory. Eleven samples exceed the pesticide

maximum values ​​in such a way that they contradict the legal regulations and

must be objected to. One sample even contains six pesticides, two of them in

bulk that pose a health hazard. At Zurich Airport alone, 20 to 25 tons of

exotic vegetables from Asia arrive every day. Five large and countless small

Asian shops import these fresh foods from the Far East. Large Swiss

distributors also have a small selection of Asian vegetables on their shelves.

“Kassensturz” has made purchases in various Asian specialty shops in Bern and

Zurich as well as at Coop, Globus and Migros. Fresh products such as Thai

eggplants, watercress or okra were placed in the shopping basket. All products

come from Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

Complained about half The Zurich Cantonal Laboratory examined the 20 samples on

behalf of the "Saldo" and "Kassensturz" magazines. Only eight of the samples

tested are unproblematic "and can be eaten without hesitation," explains canton

chemist Martin Brunner.

The canton chemist has to object to the much larger group. Eleven samples

exceed the maximum value of individual pesticides (see results table). "There

is good manufacturing practice and good agricultural practice is not adhered to,

" says Brunner. "We don't want these products here on the Swiss market."

Terrifying: Another sample, a Parsley from Vietnam, even has to be classified

as “hazardous to health”. "The vegetables contain two active ingredients at a

height that can have health effects." A normal portion of this parsley is

enough to feel the effects on nerves or organs, according to the Zurich canton

chemist. If a product exceeds the specified limit (ARfD - acute reference dose,

see box), it may no longer be sold in Switzerland.

Import stopped "Kassensturz" bought the heavily used Parsley in the Asian shop

"A-Chau Trading" in Bern. The company wrote on request: "We stopped importing

Parsley from Vietnam immediately after we got the results from you." In

addition, they immediately informed the supplier of the defects.

Pesticide problems for years The large distributors Coop and Globus, the

laboratory complains about snake beans or Thai spring onions and okra. Both

for decades. Those responsible know the problem of pesticide-laden vegetables

from Asia. "We importers are all obliged to carry out self-checks," says Amrit

Aggarwal. What his company does specifically: They would build a relationship

of trust with the producers directly in the country of manufacture to ensure

the quality standards.

«The difficulty is: my supplier doesn't want to disappoint me. If he can

deliver too little, he buys additional goods because of that », says Aggarwal.
