Thebes Time on the ship didn't seem to pass, but one day there was jubilant
unrest on board. The happiness of the soldiers about the impending homecoming
was so great that they wanted to let the children share their joy. Two soldiers
fetched them on deck and, proudly swelling their chest, indicated a larger
settlement before them. The men cheerfully spoke to the children and although
Nefer did not understand the language, it was clear to them that the fighters
were singing praises to this place. Again and again they repeated the word
"Thebes" and Nefer realized that this must be the name of the place. At first
only the usual smaller, flat buildings appeared on the bank; then die Augen der
Kinder immer größer. So etwas hatten sie noch nie gesehen und nicht einmal in
den kühnsten Geschichten ihrer Großmütterthe children's eyes are getting
bigger. They had never seen anything like it and hadn't even heard of it in the
boldest stories of their grandmothers and fathers. In the midst of the greenery
surrounding the Nile lay temples, palaces, villas, brightly painted columns,
stone tips reaching up to the sky, the ends of which, covered with electrons,
shone like bright gold in the light of the rising sun, all surrounded by
endless mighty city walls interrupted by countless numbers mighty gates. Later
Nefer would learn that the pointed pillars were called obelisks and the gates
were called pylons. The early rays of the Re bathed the sky and river in a
spectrum of colors, from gold to deep purple. It was just overwhelming. Nefer
couldn't tear himself away from the sight but soon the children were brought
down and washed and combed as carefully as possible. New, strange clothes were
put on them and Nefer realized that they were being made up for sale. When they
were driven back on deck, a plank had already been extended to a jetty, which
the children now had to walk over. Nefer looked around more and more curiously
than fearfully. They were somewhere in the middle of the huge settlement which,
as Nefer now knew, was the city "Thebes". From the jetty they came across wide
stone steps and through a large, brightly painted pylon gate onto a wider
street that lines the banks of the Nile and the harbor, then into a tangle of
smaller and larger alleys. One to two-story houses stood close together from
their flat roofs, curiously men and women glanced at the small procession of
soldiers and children. Nefer found that the roofs were mostly laid out like
small gardens and directly invited to stay. Since she continued hesitantly, one
of the soldiers pushed her roughly so that she almost fell. They had finally
achieved their goal. A small round square in the middle between the beige
houses, on which apparently a larger market took place. Nefer stopped and
sucked the fragrant air deep into her lungs. With her eyes closed, she tried to
smell the different smells ... that the roofs were mostly laid out like small
gardens and directly invited you to stay. Since she continued hesitantly, one

sucked the fragrant air deep into her lungs. With her eyes closed, she tried to
smell the different smells
sort: there were the scents of various perfumes that blew over to her from the
stands of the scent and perfume makers. She blinked curiously and peered at the
women handling various utensils, because from home she knew no fragrant water,
only fragrant oils. She also noticed myrrh, whose scent she knew, because in
her country it was also used to pay homage to the gods. There was also a smell
of roasted meat from the open food stalls, of all kinds of spices and - not
wholly covered by the many fragrances - Nefer also noticed the smell of
latrines. The children were led past colorful jewelry stands and other dealers
and were finally gathered in front of a large pedestal.
The auction They were towed up a few wooden steps and Nefer noticed that more
and more people were streaming in from their other stalls. Puffing and
snorting, a very corpulent man pushed the grinning soldiers aside and waddled
up the steps to the platform. His barrel-like figure was wrapped in a precious
white robe, which was held together in the middle by a heavily used pearl-
studded belt. His shaved head shone over two eyes that almost disappeared in
bacon sausages and the hanging cheeks framed a very soft, almost female mouth.
The earrings, the many chains and bracelets, as well as the fact that the man
was heavily made up, brought the amused soldiers to comments and whistles,
which even Nefer, in their childhood, than usually thought of women. The fat
man carried a long whip with him, which one could hardly have believed,
leather helmet from one of the mocking fighters. The so humiliated reached for
the exposed spot and was already furiously trying to climb the wooden
structure, but was held back by his laughing comrades.
